Board of Control

Don Pope Davis, President

I joined The Ohio State University as Dean of the College of Education and Human Ecology in July 2018 and soon after joined the Faculty Club. It is a home away from home for me and the College – a place for small lunches with internal and external partners to larger appreciation events, special meetings, and everything in between. Like my colleagues across campus, it serves as an extension of our college; supporting us as we conduct our “business” toward our vision. It is providing a rich history all the while being a place where the future of the University is visualized.”

Jeanne Osborne, Past President

I joined the Faculty Club in 2011 and I have been a staff member at The Ohio State University for almost 34 years. I am currently an Assistant Dean in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences where I have the privilege of overseeing the academic affairs for the college. I have held many positions throughout my career, but I got my start as a bench scientist focused on molecular biology of growth and development and immune function. Since then, I have taught courses and advised students, and have had the opportunity to work with many great people across the university. My family has a great history with this university: I, my husband and both our daughters are graduates of The Ohio State University, and we are all proud Buckeyes!

My family has enjoyed many meals and celebrations at the Club - the Sunday Brunches have become part of our family tradition, and we wouldn’t miss a tailgate at the Faculty Club before home games! As a member of the Advisory Committee and the Board of Control, I have had the opportunity to see how great this Club is from a behind-the-scenes perspective. The leadership and staff of the Club work hard to provide a welcoming and comfortable environment with great food, fun (and educational) programs, and plenty of spaces to collaborate and enjoy the company of family, friends, and colleagues. I look forward to serving the members of the Club and working with the leadership and staff as we continue to ‘Build the Road Forward’!

Eric Smith, Treasurer

As an alumni member of The Faculty Club, I appreciate the opportunity I have had to serve as the Treasurer of your Board of Control this last term. And I look forward to this next term as our Club moves from surviving to thriving.

In addition to serving on your Board, I also serve on the Advisory Board of the Master of Human Resource Management Program at the Fisher College of Business. It has been a pleasure working with many dedicated people who make our Club and University the institution of which we are so proud. Vocationally, I am the Vice President of Human Resources for Stanley Steemer International, Inc. and have held that position for twenty years. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, and Master of Business Administration from The Ohio State University. Paul Beck, Secretary

Paul A. Beck (1971 PhD, University of Michigan) is currently Academy Professor of Political Science at The Ohio State University and international co-coordinator of the Comparative National Elections Project (u.osu.edu/cnep), which now includes over 60 national election surveys since 1992 in 31 different democracies. Most recently, he co-directed a national survey of voters in the 2020 election. Over the course his career, Beck has published 9 books and numerous articles in leading professional journals on voting behavior, political parties, and public opinion; has received 5 grants from the National Science Foundation; and has been a regular commentator on politics in the media and before community and professional groups. He is recipient of the Distinguished Scholar and Distinguished University Service awards from Ohio State University and the American Political Science Association’s Goodnow and Eldersveld awards for distinguished service to the profession and lifetime professional contributions to the field of political organizations and parties, respectively. He served as the Political Science department chair for 19 years at two different universities and as dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Ohio State.

I have been a member of the Faculty Club since I came to Ohio State in 1987. The two universities where I had served prior to coming here did not have faculty clubs, or any central meeting place that could bring faculty/staff together informally. So, I was delighted to find a faculty club here and have used it extensively, as both an active faculty member and an emeritus professor, since 2012. It has proven even more valuable during my emeritus years, as it affords me the opportunity to meet friends and colleagues, active and retired, easily. I have attended many special events at the Club, including my older son’s wedding reception, which was hosted spectacularly. Over the years, the food service has gotten better and better. I have enjoyed carry-outs during the pandemic shutdown and meals in the Main Dining Room and terrace now that things are opening up. Recent renovations, especially the terrace, have greatly enhanced the facilities of the Club, making it even more attractive a venue. I am a past member of the Board of Control and am looking forward to serving on it again. In so many ways, the Faculty Club is a valuable part of the OSU campus – indeed, a treasure.

“I joined the Faculty Club shortly after returning to the university in 2014 as an employee of the Office of Government Affairs. My two and a half decades of service to the state of Ohio, where I put my Ohio State University undergraduate degree in political science to good use, taught me that social functions and in-person gathering opportunities for both work and leisure purposes are vitally important to our lives and wellbeing. The Faculty Club has proven itself to be a fixture for faculty, staff, students, alumnae, and guests from many walks of life. Places like the club create personal relationships and civic engagement that serve each of us as individuals as well as society as a whole. The more we can do to pass along a sense of belonging to each successive generation, the more we can do to preserve civil discourse in an increasingly isolated and electronically distant population.

“I joined the Faculty Club in Fall 2017. Since then, the Faculty Club has been central to building an inclusive and collegial research community at The Ohio State University. The Faculty Club has been a place to have lunch with mentors, colleagues, students, and distinguished guests. It has also been a place for celebrating achievements, facilitating research conversations, and connecting over Happy Hour. I hope that the wider OSU community will come to know how the Faculty Club can help build community.”

Mark Bartman, Member at Large

Mark Bartman, Major General (Ret.), is the founder of 9G Consulting LLC and currently serves as a consultant to several companies, to include acting as the Program Executive (PE) for the Ohio Federal Research Network (OFRN) and for the Air Force Academic Partnership and Engagement Experiment Program (APEX) at The Ohio State University. General Bartman’s most recent military assignment was as The Adjutant General, Ohio National Guard, from 2015 to 2019. He was a member of the Governor’s cabinet and was responsible for the command of the Ohio National Guard and the military readiness of the Ohio Militia. General Bartman graduated from The Ohio State University in 1982 and entered military service in September 1982 through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program as a distinguished graduate from Detachment 645. General Bartman has served in numerous staff and operations positions in the United States Air Force and the Ohio Air National Guard to include serving as the Air National Guard lead to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force for the Total Force Task Force and commanding the 180th Fighter Wing. He is a command pilot with more than 3,200 flying hours, including 29 combat missions in Operations Provide Comfort, Northern Watch, and Southern Watch.

I joined the Faculty Club during the time my oldest daughter was an undergraduate student at Ohio State, and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities to use its facilities for meetings, special events and football Saturdays. My wife and I utilized the Faculty Club for the rehearsal dinner for our two older children before their weddings, and I have personally taken advantage of its conference ability to hold meetings with Ohio State faculty from the College of Engineering and community industry partners as the Office of Research developed the Institute for Cybersecurity and Digital Trust. Prior to my position on the Board of Control, I served on the Faculty Club Advisory Board. As a veteran, the Faculty Club leadership was very willing to explore new partnerships with the Military and Veteran Services Office at Ohio State, and develop new opportunities for the members who are veterans. I am excited to work with like-minded members of the Board of Control as we emerge from a pandemic and collaborate to ensure the Faculty Club’s future success.

Pharmacy Manager, Office of Student Life, Student Health Services. I work at the OSU Wilce Student Health Center. The pharmacy is a service to our Ohio State students for pharmaceutical care and the pharmacy also serves faculty and staff. We provide prescription services including mailing out of prescriptions, over the counter items, vaccines, and counseling. The pharmacy also provides logistical service to our clinic in supplying vaccines, contraceptives, and medications for our clinic staff to use in an ambulatory care setting. I started my pharmacy studies here at Ohio State and graduated with BS in Pharmacy in 1992. After OSU, I worked in the private sector in various chain pharmacies and independent pharmacy. I started working at OSU in 2001 and became the manager in 2009. I also went back to the College of Pharmacy at this university and received my Doctorate in Pharmacy in 2012.

I have been a member of the Faculty Club since the mid-2000’s. I have found it to be my oasis of calm during a busy workday; I have benefited from taking a lunch break here that allows me to be recharged for the remainder of the day. I have always enjoyed the courteous and professional service the Faculty Club’s staff and to the members dining with them. I have been to many events at the Faculty Club from departmental work events to holiday celebrations. I use the Faculty Club to entertain coworkers and interns who are on a clinical rotation at our clinic. I have brought friends and family here as well: when my parents were up from Florida I took them to the lobster night, and when here for football game Saturdays, friends and I enjoy the food, drinks and exciting atmosphere of OSU fans enjoying the events. I have enjoyed speeches and luncheons here as well such as the historian talk by Allan Millet about Korean and US relations, or just enjoying the artwork placed through the building. I think the Club provides the university with a dignified, tasteful retreat for members to mix relaxation, dining, social bonding, and work in a convenient and beautiful setting overlooking Mirror Lake and the Oval.
